CHARLESTON TREASURES GULLAH HISTORY TOUR - Jan 24, 2019

PRICE PER PERSON $70

We will join engaging historian Alphonso Brown, owner and operator of Gullah Tours, on a driving tour through the places, history and stories that are relevant to the rich and varied contributions of black Charlestonians. Mr. Brown adds humor and suspense as he shares compelling information with his unique perspective. His stories come to life as he provides a glimpse into an ancient culture of mysterious people brought to Charleston as slaves.

Gullah is the language spoken by the Lowcountry’s first black inhabitants. The language and culture still thrive today in and around the Charleston and Beaufort region. Our tour guide is fluent in the Gullah language and familiar with many of the Gullah customs which he will share with us.

You will travel back in time to the days of slavery in Charleston and learn about the sweetgrass basket makers, the Aiken-Rhett House slave quarters, black slave owners, blacksmith Philip Simmons, and the foreign slave trade at the Customs House.

After lunch, spend time at the historic City Market, located in the heart of Charleston. Filled with specialty food items, unique local art, the famous sweetgrass baskets, clothing and a wide variety of locally produced and handmade items, the Charleston City Market is a top-rated cultural shopping experience!

PRICE PER PERSON $70
