MEPKIN ABBEY & BERKELEY COUNTY MUSEUM - March 20, 2019

PRICE PER PERSON $80

Mepkin Abbey is an active Trappist monastery located on the Cooper River. The property was first the plantation home of Henry Laurens, Congressional Constitutional president from 1762 through 1911. It was later purchased by publisher and philanthropist Henry R. Luce and his wife, Clare Boothe Luce who gave the property to the Roman Catholic Church for a monastic foundation in 1949. The beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens were developed through time by the three long-term occupants, each who nourished the land offering a rich architectural and botanical legacy.

We will be greeted by a Trappist Monk at the monastery and provide a guided tour of the Church with dialogue regarding the Orders history and beliefs. You will have time to leisurely walk the breathtaking gardens and browse the gift shop. The shop offers mushrooms grown at the Abbey’s farm, candies, preserves and creamed honey as well as a variety of specialty gift items.

After lunch at the Barony House, we will tour the Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center, located on the grounds of the Old Santee Canal Park. The Museum chronicles the area’s history as far back as 4,000 B.C. through exhibits and artifacts that focus on Francis Marion (the Swamp Fox), American Indians, Colonial Life, Civil War, early medicine, rural electrification, early education and the Francis Marion National Forest.
