Wednesday, September 4 Back by popular demand is our unique Covered Bridges of Georgia tour.  Travel the backroads of Georgia as we go in search of these truly American countryside icons. Our first stop is Howards Covered Bridge in Oglethorpe County which clocks in at 168-feet. Built over the Big Cloud Creek in 1905 by convict labor, the special lattice design and remote location make this bridge rather special. We continue onto Comer, GA, and the Watson Mill Bridge & State Park.  This may be one of the most beautiful, not to mention most popular, covered bridges in the state. Built in 1885, this stunning bridge spans 229-feet and is the longest covered bridge in the state!  A boxed lunch is included today and Watson Mill is the perfect location for a picnic before we head to our next covered bridge, Cromer’s Mill. This historical beauty was built in 1906 and spans 132-feet in length over Nails Creek. With the famed Town Lattice design, this bridge is quite spectacular no matter the time of year you visit. The final bridge of the day is Stovall Mill Covered Bridge, aka Sautee-Nacoochee, Helen Bridge, and Chickamauga Bridge. The Stovall Mill Covered Bridge is the smallest covered bridge in Georgia. Built in 1895, it is one-lane wide, 33 feet long, and made of wood. It spans Chickamauga Creek in White County and is currently owned by the White County Historical Society.  This covered bridge was featured in the 1951 movie “I’d Climb the Highest Mountain” starring Susan Heyward. As we approach the Alpine town of Helen, GA, where we will be overnighting, we’ll make a stop at The Old Sautee Store for an extraordinary choice of local produce and crafts. Dinner this evening is included in Helen, GA and overnight. D

Thursday, September 5 Following breakfast we return south to our final covered bridge of the trip, Poole’s Mill Bridge & Park in Cumming, GA. Built in 1901 by a Mr. Bud Gentry, the bridge is 4.6 feet long by 14.5 feet wide and spans Settlement Creek.  There’s no better place for a hearty lunch than the nearby Bulloch House Warm Springs, where Southern hospitality is not just a saying – it’s a way of life. Our final stop of our journey is the town of Juliette, GA, where the 1991 film “Fried Green Tomatoes” was filmed. Stroll McCracken Street and try to recognize familiar locations from the movie before one last treat: a visit to The Whistle Stop Café for a photo op and a sweat treat to snack on during our journey home.
